This book is OK and gives you a general idea of what you need to know for the CLEP. I highly recommend using this book in conjunction with Barron's EZ 101 American history, 1877 to the present. If you use both of these books, you will pass the test. Read this book, and Barron's, and then take the practice tests in this book, and then read them both again (don't worry they are both short), and then you should pass this test with ease. I did very well on the exam and have never taken a history course. Also, I only spent about three days preparing for the test but I would recommend about 2 weeks, 2-3 hours per day if you are serious about passing it. Lots of info.
The book has a lot of good information and gives the reader a really good understanding of history during this time period. To say the book lacks would be an understatement. The book completely excludes popular authors, their work, and the significance of them. You WILL NEED to supplement this information.However, if you studied the 60-some written information in this book and really understand it, you WILL pass the test. With the information in this text, you can infer a lot of other information not included in the book. If your college sets a higher score than the recommended 50, you will be pushing your luck. Include supplemental information as stated earlier in this review, and you will have no trouble.
I used this book as my primary study guide for the CLEP. I did both practice tests and the diagnostic. I also did the Official CLEP study guide test ($10) from the CLEP website. All-in-all about 3 weeks of studying around an hour or less every night. I just passed the CLEP with a 58. I am happy with the book, but it by no means made the CLEP easy.
Purchased the digital edition for Kindle. The book description is the same as print editiona and it says that the diagnostic and practice exams come with the purchase--they don't. In order to access this content you must pay an additional fee which is not mentioned in book description. When I mentioned this to Mariela at REA customer service, she was rude and unresponsive. I asked for a supervisor, but according to Mariela "they aren't available right now".
I’ve studied and passed 5 other CLEP exams but this book doesn’t prepare you effectively for this CLEP exam. I scored a 49 & 50 is passing. I studied for 2 weeks about 2.5 hours a day. The problem is is that this book doesn’t give enough context around important events. You will know what the question is asking during exam but the options in have nothing to do with what was taught in the book.
I passed, but I used other resources as well. The actual exam covers so much more than this book covers. I still recommend it because it has good online practice exams that helped me tremendously

This is the second CLEP test I have taken and I feel like the information provided in this book did not help me as much as the Government REA guide for the Government CLEP. I took each practice test 3 times and I did pass the actual CLEP but they miss a lot of information on important authors in U.S. History. They do cover the presidents, several wars, and amendments quite well. This was my sole source of studying but I took AP U.S. History in high school so I think that helped me as well. If I were you, I would spend more time on the 1920's to 1970's as the more modern information like the Persian Gulf War and the late 19th century information was used for very few questions on the CLEP.
