In the follow-up to her wonderful The Dandelion Insurrection, Rivera Sun expertly avoids the Second Volume Trap. Far too many authors of trilogies make the middle book a device mostly for recapping Book One and setting the scene for Book Three. But The Roots of Resistance does far, far more than that. There is plenty of new action and major plot developments, twists and surprises, betrayals and confessions, all in the service of a great story about the trials and triumphs of a non-violent grassroots movement to secure a better world. Can’t wait for the concluding volume!
"The Roots of Resistance" is pure medicine for serious times! This book takes the reader on a fast flying carpet ride through the unified highs and burned out lows of modern day activism. Rivera skillfully weaves principles and historical examples of nonviolent activism throughout the book in an engaging and uplifting way. By the end, I realized with surprise that I had soaked up a whole psychological suitcase full of tools and quiet smiling notions on how to apply nonviolent techniques to the very real, very intense issues we face as a nation and global community. Although this book is a great sequel to "The Dandelion Insurrection", it has a shine and soul of its own, and can definitely stand alone as a spirited and timely read in its own right.
I love this book! It's a story of change and of what's possible when we no longer accept the world we are in and move forward to create a world whose foundation is love. Through characters and scenes that come alive on every page, Sun gives us inspiration, encouragement, and a way forward toward creating a world of justice for all. She weaves a story that is at once chilling in its mirroring of today's events and, at the same time, reminds us that we each have a role to play in how our world unfolds. Fasten your seat belt for a ride through revolution!
I am such a massive fan of this author! Really enjoyed The Dandelion Insurrection, so I was overjoyed when it became a trilogy. I've just cracked this second in the series and once again, swept right back into the story - a story for the now and the very, very near future. Read it. Read it by yourself. Read it with your teens (especially right now as teenage kids everywhere are mobilizing and making change). Read it with your neighbors. Get the DI study guide and start a group in your living room. Let's be the change - it's so much easier than we think. Thanks again, Rivera Sun!
For all those that feel they can do nothing to change the course that our country is currently on here's a great book that will alter that belief. Written in a manner that parallels the dire condition that so many American's are faced with today under an administration bent on stripping away most of the protections and benefits afforded them by previous more enlightened administrations it is timely. So well written with believable characters that reflect "we the people" in identifiable and relatable ways. I highly recommend this book and its predecessor, The Dandelion Insurrection to anyone who wants to make a difference but isn't sure how.
After reading the Dandelion Insurrection, I could hardly wait to read the sequel, and I wasn't disappointed. It is a book filled with hope and inspiration. Rivera shares the power of people and what they can do, when they work together and have a common goal. It gives us all hope for a future that is bright, even in what feels like darkness. It is people like Rivera Sun, that inspire action and real commitment to the good within our country.
If you haven't read The Dandelion Insurrection and The Roots of Resistance by Rivera Sun you are missing out on some incredible writing. Not only perfect reading material for our times, but her writing is poetic.The story is captivating, and the writing has me stopping frequently to just revel in the nuances of the words, phrases, and metaphors.It is easy to lose heart in these days when everything is upended; through these novels Rivera reminds us that the power lies within us - the heartbeat of life is in everything.
I can't wait for the 3rd one!Rivera Sun's writings are not a balm to soothe the complacent but a poultice to remove the poison and heal the infection of the disempowering effects of systemic patriarchy.As it crumbles we rise. By reading Rivera's works I feel I can rise in joy, strength and clarity of vision. She's prolific but in these transitioning times I have to find more artists like this who actually get what evolutionary alternatives are all about, and as she educates she also entertains in some deeply moving ways.
