About the Author

Born in Malta but raised in Swindon, England, where he still lives, Andy Partridge is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He is the founder of the internationally renowned new-wave group XTC, with whom he recorded fourteen widely acclaimed albums--among them English Settlement, Drums and Wires, and Skylarking--during a career spanning four decades. Todd Bernhardt has played, recorded, and toured with a number of bands based in the Washington DC area. He also has years of experience in corporate communications and freelance writing, having created pieces for Modern Drummer magazine and a number of other music-related publications. He's proud to be the father of two wonderful children, lover of a beautiful woman, and friend of Andy Partridge.

A unique insight into the mind of one of the most influential songwriters of the last 40 years. This book takes the form of a conversation between a writer (and uber-fan) and the musician - and delves into the place and time that shaped each of a number of songs written and performed by XTC. A must-have for fans of the band.

What do you do when you find that someone whose music you have greatly enjoyed is annoying?I do not think he can help it. He is an only child and he is so used to being the center of attention he does not even realize how annoying everyone else finds that to be. One can only imagine, as much as they admired his abilities that Moulding, Chambers and Gregory had to work at ignoring this tendency to continue working with Partridge.There are passages in this book that are truly interesting. When he speaks of his approach to songwriting and playing guitar it is worthwhile reading. There are a few anecdotes that are interesting.The ultimate is when he laments Elvis Costello having more money than he does. Well, dear sir, Elvis has worked much harder than you have. Sure he has put out even more clunkers than you but that is because if you do nothing you can do no wrong. Money is made performing and AP did not want to perform. Instead of being grateful that the music business has allowed him a career where he has been in control (for better and for worse) and was able to make his own decisions he finds it unfair that Costello is on THE TIMES big money list. I think I call this schizophrenia. Sure they pushed him around early on since HE said he wanted to make some money. Partridge is like so many who think you just do one good thing and the millions roll in. He should be embarrassed.I thought, before reading this book, that I would really enjoy getting to speak to Partridge. Now I know I would not. The other three would have been far more interesting people to know and I now admire what they put up with since they did love the music but had to suffer with the man. The old labor of love.I am enjoying the book since I like reading about a songwriter's approach to the song. Don't get me wrong, Partridge at his best is of the best. But the mark of a great artist is to be humbled by your work. To be as amazed as everyone else that it exists at all. Instead Partridge has elected to jump up and down saying IT'S ME, I'M THE ONE WHO DID THAT.It is not what I expected.

Andy Partridge's enthusiasm for discussing his work is infectious, and he never fails to respond to Todd Bernhardt's questions with some combination of wit and self-effacing reflection and brutal honesty. He denies being too knowledgeable about the technical aspects of music-making and songwriting, but I think he underestimates himself on that.He's a songwriter and musician who thinks deeply about how to convey his ideas in words and music, and his memory of decades gone by serves him well. For me, it's a real page-turner.Great questions from Bernhardt that will satisfy the most hardcore fan, and also an entertaining overview of Partridge's town of Swindon in the introduction by John Morrish. Some cool visuals, too, from Andy's notebook.

If you're an XTC fan or just a fan of the musical producing process, this is an incredible book. The book is incredibly easy to read as it is conducted in a question and answer format. Andy Partridge's friend Todd Bernhardt asks Andy a question (in bold) and Andy comments or answers in a free form reply.Todd seems quite familiar with XTC and Andy and knows which questions to ask Andy and the responses are often quite humorous and/or surprising. It's been a true joy to read this book as it makes Andy and the rest of the band (which Andy often heaps plenty of praise upon) more real to those of us who have never seen them in concert. (Especially important since XTC stopped touring in the early 80s)The only drawback to this book is that it left me wanting more. There are certain songs that I wanted to hear about which Todd and Andy never got to. But who knows? Maybe if this book is popular, they'll get around to writing "Complicated Game, Vol 2" :)

A fascinating insight into the mind of the great Andy Partridge. The amount of detail on each song is remarkable - Andy has clearly kept notes on the development on every song he's ever written. This is really only for XTC fans, it's not a biographical tale of life inside an innovative, moderately successful English band in the '80s. It's pretty much question and answer format, but the chats are informal, light-hearted and always insightful and informative. I still can't believe that some wise record company executive hasn't signed up Andy to make solo records. He won't tour, but I'll bet he's got hundreds of wonderful unrecorded songs.

I found this book to be very boring. I guess I don't really care what motivated Andy & Co. to write the songs. Yes, I cared about The Beatles and how they wrote Strawberry Fields or Walrus or every other Beatles song (which is why I've read, like, fifty Beatles books). But as I was reading this book, I realized that I didn't really care - despite the fact that I love XTC's music.Sorry.

Andy Partridge is an interesting interviewee and artist. XTC is one of my favorite bands in rock and roll and pop. A winning combination when he walks through the writing of a representative sampling of songs in this collection.

This is not only a great book about Andy Partridge and XTC, it is a book about the process of songwriting and mechanics of recording. There are many incredible stories and and a wealth of detail available about the bits and pieces that go into his style of songwriting, it's hard not to come out of with ideas and a new perspective. Done in interview style by the very knowledgeable Todd Bernhardt, this book is made all the better by Todd's experience as a recording artist and songwriter. I highly recommend this book.
