This book is highly entertaining, and I have discovered dozens of albums I would never have heard had I not researched them. This was a perfect introduction to many rare recordings. I love digging around and finding obscure music. This is a major resource for me.

This is a great reference book for unknown/little known/lost psychedelic music lovers. It's not as comprehensive as I might like it to be and seems to have some omissions that I don't really understand, it does have many reviews and listings for albums and recordings you won't find anywhere else. The information it does include is exhaustive, particularly details about pressings, reissues, sound quality, number of copies pressed, and more. It's a necessity if you collect this variety of music and is a great read as the reviews and descriptions - while opinionated (I like that and they disclose that) - are really well written. The section on rare black psych/funk issues is tiny and doesn't include a lot of things it should, so it's without merit, however the section on tax scam record labels is beyond informative - great! All in all, and awesome book, and the illustrations are all in color.

Very comprehensive Reference guide to the garage bands and other almost famous rock players.

Item as described. Highly recommended.

Love it!

Almost nothing in this book ever charted, and a great deal of it was never available outside of a limited geographical area, with even that sometimes limited to the musician's basement. Very few of these albums were ever on a major label; most of them pressed in very small runs. There are a number of major label releases in here, but none of them sold much of anything; most of them disappeared with barely a ripple.Yet if you make the judgment that means this music isn't any good, you would be wrong. This is a ridiculously handy guide to the obscure and forgotten, far and away the best reference of its' type. There are a couple of decent Richie Unterburger books that are close to this; but they pale next to this volume. The reviews are written with humor and verve; I doubt you'll agree with every one, but the opinions presented here have merit even when they sound wrong to your ears. Even as massive as it is, it's scope is limited: there are no soul/R&B small press lps reviewed here; and singles are only mentioned and not reviewed. Those of you more expert than I can no doubt find other omissions. But it still covers a phenomenal amount of recorded music.Besides, I've long been of the opinion that the value of a book like this is not what it lacks, but if it can be trusted to send you in search of new and interesting music. I've had this book since its' most recent reprint, and I still find myself coming back to it and ordering albums reviewed within its' covers. Anonymous, Zerfas, DR Hooker, Plastic Cloud-- there's a number of great albums I'd never heard prior to reading this book. This is almost like a companion volume to the Christgau consumer guides, with Christgau covering the better known stuff (not that he won't delve into the obscure; his seventies and eighties volumes are highly recommended) and this book covering the small press/private press world. The Acid Archives is invaluable to those of us who like to dig. I don't know I'd spend the 200$ plus resellers seem to be asking for this, however, as I imagine it may eventually be reprinted. Editor Lundborg recently died, however, so hopefully the book isn't tied up hopelessly in his estate. I'd certainly put the money down if a third edition is ever printed. There's a kindle version that sells for about 35$; but I unfortunately cannot advise you on how well that is formatted.

While the book is a fascinating look into the world of the music that was not covered/released by the major labels it's value is somewhat lessened as the Kindle edition seems to lack the supporting essays that were included in the print version. This is especially annoying as one of them is referenced directly in the main directory portion of the book as a source for further information on the strange world of Tax-scam labels.

I thought that the first edition of 'Acid Archives' was thedefinitive guide to U.S. private press recordings and the elitecadre of record collectors who specialize in that "vastwasteland" of obscure vinyl classics and clunkers. Negatory onthat there, good buddy! This newly-revised and expanded SecondEdition adds about another hundred pages of listings, featuresand (for the first time) full-color photos to further tantalizethe novice and frustrate the completist collector. Some of myfavorite neglected discs are here this time (a big hello to allyou "Big" Jerry Soloman fanatics out there) and the presentationhas never been better. Virtually everything from the earlier editionis included, plus an appendix of 'collecting genre' essays by some ofthe major players in the private press field. Whether you are aserious music fan with a taste for the exotic or a casual recordcollector looking for new thrills, this is the book for you. Theonly thing that the first edition had over the 'new improved' modelwas a helpful glossary of genre-terms that provided the uninitiatedwith a guide to the many different kinds of music listed here. I wasaware that "busker folk" and "acid folk" were two radically differentkinds of music, but even I (as a private press LP nut) didn't realizethat "acid folk" and "folk-psych" music were two distinctly differentanimals. No matter what your level of interest, you'll learn somethingnew and unexpected from Patrick The Lama and his `Potala-full' ofvinyl experts in this well-executed and strangely addictive guide.
