Review
“Brilliant, compassionate, and radically optimistic, Salt in My Soul captures the heartbreaking beauty of being alive. I feel fuller, more educated, and more human having read this book. Mallory Smith may have salt in her soul, but she’s all firecracker. She is a gift and so is her writing—every grain of it.”—Beck Dorey-Stein, New York Times bestselling author of From the Corner of the Oval“In Salt in My Soul, Mallory Smith is bracingly candid and unflinching in her portrayal of life with chronic illness. Yet she also writes with warmth and humor about the everyday experiences of growing up as a young woman in search of meaning, purpose, and love while knowing her life will likely be cut short. This is a deeply moving book full of wisdom about health, life, and love—and about the importance of finding happiness wherever and whenever we can. Salt in My Soul broke my heart but also inspired me to make the most of every day.”—Will Schwalbe, New York Times bestselling author of The End of Your Life Book Club“Those of us fortunate enough to know the amazing Mallory Smith learned that no matter how sick, she would find escape from the prison of her illness to play water polo, to be prom queen, to go to Stanford, to graduate Phi Beta Kappa, and to know true love in her twenty-five years. With the strength of her parents, the support of her many friends, and her own great grit, Mallory lived her ambitions. Salt in My Soul is a beautiful, brave, unsparingly insightful account of a courageous girl who becomes a woman warrior and fights for her life while living it fully.”—Eric Lax, author of The Mold in Dr. Florey’s Coat“With spicy wit and brutal honesty, Salt in My Soul reveals the heartache and courage of a young woman who always knew that her life would be cut short by a chronic disease. Read this memoir and you’ll be astonished by Mallory’s bravery and uplifted by her vivacious spirit.”—Randi Hutter Epstein, MD, MPH, writer in residence, Yale Medical School, author of Aroused

"My hope is that my writing will offer insight for people living with, or loving someone with, chronic disease". You have gone beyond your hopes. I am a mother who lost my child to cancer 3 months before you left this world. Her name is Talia - so you can imagine my surprise when I read Part One and each time your friends name came up in the book. Your story of life with the disease allowed me to peak into the mind of my own child through you. I thank-you for that from the bottom of my heart ! May your voice be heard by many . " We are the writers of our own story. That our story will someday end is inevitable for all of us, but the way we get there is not".
I stayed up all night reading ‘Salt in my Soul’ because I couldn’t put it down. I simultaneously laughed while also ugly crying. As a CF and post-lung transplant patient myself who also has B. cepacia so many things Mallory articulated I could relate with so much. It breaks my heart that she is no longer on this Earth because the world was so much brighter with her in it. Mallory was simply brilliant. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy.
This book is about so many things, most especially life, love, friendship and heartache. It's about Living Happy.Mallory's writing style flows with such ease, while gripping the reader making you unable to put the book down!I did not know Mallory, but reading this book gives me the privilege of reading her story; the story of an unbelievably strong, articulate, smart and beautiful young woman. This is a book everyone should read!
300 pages in all of one night because I couldn't stop and didn't want it to end. an indescribably moving and important book, written by a fierce and effervescent girl-turned-woman. full of insights into the worlds of chronic illness and patient care, the facts of human mortality and the quest for stability, and the everyday life of a smart, ambitious, and relentlessly kind person. a timely and timeless book.
Demonstrating wisdom and writing far beyond her years, Mallory asks and attempts to answer all the big questions that connect us regarding mortality, existence, and purpose. While the origin of Mal's story revolves around the implications of living with a chronic illness ,cystic fibrosis, she also touches on coming-of-age issues with a poetic-esque prose and full transparency of her own experience. This is a must-read for anyone looking to gain important, life-changing perspective on what we may find while facing tremendous obstacles. I read it while I was in the hospital and can honestly say Mallory gave me the strength to persevere.
Mal was able to write so beautifully about the impossibly hard things that she was going through. The way she was able to communicate her outlook on life and love, family. Her brilliance shone through every page. I think especially having known her, and seen her be such an unbelievable person, but not fully knowing everything she was going through ‘behind the scenes’, just proves how strong and special she was. I think this book is going to help a lot of people
Mallory’s spirit and outlook on life absolutely made me a better clinician and overall person!! I believe that her words have so much to offer people living with chronic/life-limiting illnesses and those who help in caring and supporting them!
This is the first time in a while that I have such strong ties to a book. I feel all the feels when reading each chapter or entry. I am beyond impressed with the impact that Salt In My Soul has had on the people who have read it or on those that are in the middle of it like me. I am taking my time reading it because I don't want it to end!
