Even if you're not Anglican/Episcopalian, or not even Christian this book is definately an important read. At it's heart is the real life experience of what it's like to be a person who has integrated sex, intimacy and love facing down institutions led by people who can't even imagine sex, intimacy and love together. Gene Robinson stumbles into an age old conflict in the church. Celebacy, amputating one's sexuality to achieve holiness vs. the idea that God (being love) is always present in the love between sexually bonded couples. Is Christianity an anti-sex cult that holds that love making can not exist in human sexuality and only reproduction can justify it? Or will Christians embrace the idea that God IS love and all love comes from God including sexual intimacy? Gene's story puts the reader in a very interesting place to view the question of whether making love is holy, God filled and inspired or whether it's vile, the enemy of holy love and only the possibility of reproduction make it acceptable for people trying to live good lives.

An AMAZING account of faith, courage and calling as Bishop Robinson chronicles his struggles with his vocation all the way through acceptance and his ordination as the first LGBT Bishop of The Episcopal Church (while wearing a bullet-proof vest). This is a must-read for all folks who are serious about their Christian faith.

In my view, Gene Robinson is a deeply sincere Christian, and a complicated soul like anyone, who has encountered such difficulties in his career. Anyone who is interested in the controversies surrounding his role as a bishop should read his book, to hear his story told in his own words. He emerges as a sympathetic figure.

I appreciate Rev. Gene Robinson being willing to share his story about his victory over incredible hurdles in the Presbyterian church. This book shows his forgiveness, compassion and understanding of the "other side" of the gay issue. He speaks with great love for those who have tried to prevent him from being ordained in the church. His journey is inspiring and his life is a testament to all that God can do with a committed vessel.

Gene Robinson is many things to many people...To a thinking person, not seeking to use the bible as a weapon, he is a god sent messenger reminding us to think, reflect, care, and act as we would like others to think, reflect, care and act towards us. While some may think that this book was a "lost opportunity" for Robinson to tell his tale, and carry forward his role as [...] activist and standard bearer by telling how he has been maligned and abused by people of faith, he rather talks of his faith, his deeply held theology, how he interprets scripture to make it work for him and others in the 21st century. I would love to see another volume some day, where he tells us what it was like be in the "eye of the storm", but for now, this volume was actually (if you think about it a little) a far more effective "weapon" in his arsenal of intelligent respect for others -- even his enemies -- than any flogging of those who have misused his Christian nature.I had a Minister in my 20s who spent his Sunday's trying to make the Bible relevant in the ever changing world we live in. He engaged us as intelligent thinkers, able to take something that may seem irrelevant or illogical today(Jesus making water into wine) , and make it a teachable moment. This great man was eventually driven out of our church by the most pious of our "christians" because he wasn't supposed to interpret, but rather just tell us things we needed drilled into us. He walks with Gene Robinson in my estimation, and I am confident in the estimation of Jesus.
