Justo Gonzalez caps off his three-volume history of Christian thought with another solid effort. It is easy to read and provides valuable insight for the person already familiar with Reformation and post-Reformation theology. One of its major strengths is the analysis of the relationship of Calvin's thought to subsequent Reformed theology as well as the development of Luther's views among the Lutheran scholastics. His discussion of nineteenth-century Protestant thought, particularly Schleiermacher, was also insightful. I would highly recommend the book for these reasons. However, I found his discussion of twentieth century theology somewhat disappointing. Gonzalez spends a significant amount of time on various neo-orthodox thinkers such as Barth, Bultmann, and Tillich, but pretty much ignores developments within evangelical theology. Whether we agree or disagree with contemporary evangelical thought, it has been influential, particularly in America, and deserves treatment in any discussion of twentieth-century theological trends.
