Roger Tory Peterson was the pioneer for the development of the modern bird guide. My first bird guides were the little Golden Guide and the little red book guides, but the Peterson Guide to Western Birds was my next purchase and I used it for years in Arizona. The current work, "All Things Reconsidered," is a collection of Peterson's columns in Bird Watcher's Digest edited by Bill Thompson III. Among the other many gems is an essay on one of the last sightings of the now extinct ivory-billed woodpecker. This, along with vivid descriptions of birding adventures (the subtitle) around the world are well worth the price of the book. I recommend to anyone at all interested in our feathered dinosaurs!
I simply cannot imagine any birder not buying this book. I have paid more for magazines that I have thrown away than I have for this Hardcover Edition of "All Things Reconsidered" by Roger Tory Peterson, history's greatest teacher-naturalist. His Field Guides remain the standard by which all others are measured. He was the first recipient of the prestigious Ludlow Griscom Award (Birding's highest honor) and also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work as a naturalist. This collection of articles written by Mr. Peterson for Bird Watcher's Digest magazine presents the heart of the great man to the appreciative reader. Bill Thompson III is to be commended for his careful selection of essays, photographs, and illustrations included in this book that was published after Mr. Peterson's death. This book would make an excellent gift to any friend or loved one that has an interest in the natural world.
This is a fine book. It includes a lot of photos and other illustrations. The hardcover book is printed on coated paper and many of the pictures are in color. The paperback uses regular paper and all are black and white. Given the current pricing, I would recommend the hardcover.
Peterson is "THE" man when it comes to birds and birding. This books delves into his thoughts and feelings about birds. He stresses respect for nature, the outdoors, and birds, in particular.
This is a great collection of essays written by Roger Tory Peterson. Everyone knows him as a great bird artist and outstanding photographer for his day, but few think of him as the excellent writer he was. There is much more to Peterson that his revolutionary field guides.
Buying a used book through a third party is always something of a concern, but the seller had an excellent rating, and the book was listed as being in excellent condition. Both turned out to be completely true. This modern-day Audubon did so much to make birding easier with his "pointed-out" drawings in his guide. A lifelong love of nature, especially birds, is reflected in all that he did and gave to us. This book is a wonderful recounting of the birds he "chased" in many places. For those of us who can do this only vicariously, we are able to join in the adventure. Wonderful!
A perfect book to own and share with those who love not only birds, but nature as well. Recognized as one of the greatest naturalists of the world, Roger Tory Peterson's contributions (through his profound observations and accompanying photography) are beyond wonderful. Highly recommended.
