I just finished reading Spitfire Girls. Loved it, tears, joy, frustration, anger and sadness. You portrayed these women so well, it was like knowing them personally. I hope the young who read this gain some understanding and perspective of what their grandmothers went through. They were often such strong women who were so unappreciated.I didn't want it to finish.I loved the ending. As an ex WRAN who served during Vietnam I could relate to aspects of this. Thank you again, I wish I could have given it more than 5 stars.

A superficial amount of period research was done by the author, but basically "Spitfire Girls" is a very lame chick novel, written at an eighth grade comprehension level. So are the other WWII-era books by the same author that came bundled on my Kindle with this one. The dialogue and language are not at all consistent with the time period portrayed. The most egregious error was in "Wives of War" when a woman puts on pantyhose in 1946 (!). FYI, Soraya M. Lane, pantyhose were not available until the late 1960's. The character in question would have been thinking about how very lucky she was to have a pair of stockings, since those were pretty much unavailable in wartime.

But sadly I didn't.The author is right, the stories of the ATA and WASP pilots are extraordinary and need wider acknowledgement and I guess quite a few readers will like this version. The author has done a lot of research, created an interesting cast and given a lot of thought about these women who dared to be different and had to work there times as hard as men to do what they did.Sadly though I found it a total struggle to get to the end of. The author uses a passive voice which never let me feel what the characters were feeling. And while she has obviously done a lot of research I don't think she had this read by an actual pilot. As a pilot and aviation enthusiast quite a bit of the language was slightly off. I admit I come to this with a different view point to most of the author's readers, but I could easily have skimmed those bits if the story had sucked me in. Mostly it didn't. I wanted to smell the oil, feel the fear, not be told that the girls smelled and felt that.I did love the epilogue, with the 90year old ex ATA pilot flying with her Air Force grandson in a restored Spitfire, and finding her initials carved into the cockpit, something I know is based on fact.

I gave this book a five because it was right on point historically. My mother also did her part during WWII by teaching instrument flying to young male trainee pilots. She adored flying. It was her passion and just like the characters in this novel ,if given the chance, she would have flown into battle with her brothers who were Air Force pilots during the war. We also took her flying on one of her later birthdays and she also reminiscent about how it took her back to the feel of the air in the 40's. My mother who passed when she was 90 would have loved this book.

Soraya M. Lane’s terrific historical novel is about strong, remarkable women that carved out their own unique roles in WWII history. I loved this story and can’t recommend it enough!

After I got about 1/3 of the way into the book, I could not believe the conditions and problems the 8 English woman were having. So I googled ATA and found then names and pictures of these woman. In reading I was able to identify the real women to the characters in the book and yes indeed, they ferried those planes without instruments or radios. The book also includes the effort in the United States. Great book

I have really enjoyed both The Wives of War and The Spitfire Girls. Historical fiction (especially when it is based on true stories) has always been a favourite genre for me. I would recommend both of these books to anyone who likes history, strong women, action and romance blended with a bit of humor. Anything Soraya Lane writes will be an enjoyable read!

This book is a story of the emotions of the brave women who stepped up to help the war effort. There is very little about flying, just emotions. Very little about their aircraft, just the emotions before and after flying. Not an exciting book. But OK for an emotional read.
