As another reviewer mentioned, there were lots of issues a good proofreader could have fixed. Poorly constructed sentences, missing or too much punctuation, the wrong words being used (sometimes it was spelling that changed the intent, other times just incorrect words, such as lopping - to cut - as opposed to loping - to move in a particular way), strange phrases, etc.The action progresses rather perfunctorily - he did this, he did that, he said this, he looked at that. It was very step-by-step, which is not how life moves. Also, the author uses the very painful technique of having a character describe past events as if it's part of a boring college lecture, instead of making those events part of the story. It's easy for the reader to just gloss over all these events because the author has given them short shrift. Why should the reader care about them if the author sees them as second-hand events? In summary, I found the book difficult to read because of the issues above, and am not interested in reading further books.
This was a freebie on kindle and the blurb looked interesting but some of the reviews made me somewhat nervous. As a result I purchased it (I mean, what the heck, it was free so why not) but put it on the bottom of my to-read pile. When I finally read it I was happy I'd bought it and annoyed I'd paid attention to those few bad reviews. Yes there are done errors that better editing could fix, and the idea of a young orphaned boy with unknown magical powers is hardly new BUT the presentation is key. LJ Andrews does an excellent job and this version of that well known theme is done in a different enough manner with enough variation and strong characters so as to make the story be a fun read. I toyed between 3 and 4 stars but decided that since the book had hooked me enough to want (need) to read the next one it deserved that 4th star.
Wow! What a journey this was! First of all, I really enjoyed this book. Second, I had to share the love to the writer, LJ Andrews. The characters come alive with all of the action and frightening situations. It was one of those books that made a movie play in my head as I was reading. I love it when an author creates such vivid scenes and characters. This is the story of Killian. Killian, an orphan left to the system to protect him, was put into an awful situation at the age of 8. He was placed with an abusive foster father that beat him until he was old enough to defend himself, then he beat his foster mother more severely. On a particular day, he found his foster father severely beating his foster mother. He forces the father to stop and called the police then went to his best friends house. He ends up being arrested as his father told the police he had beat her. In the trial, his beloved foster mother lies to protect her abuser and Killian is sent to prison. While out in his work program, he runs into a girl he had met the summer before and together, they get attacked by strange animals. This is the beginning of a wild journey for Killian. He finds out he's sooo much more than a human and starts his training to be something more.Like I said, this book is full of action and deadly creatures. Although there is a love interest involved, that's not what the story is about. It's about Killian trying to figure out this new life and his place in it.
The writing of this made a lot of parts fairly confusing. It got better as time went on but the start was very choppy. I had to reread a lot of the story just to figure out what was going on.The story line is fairly typical but I loved the world building part of it. Just for the world I would go after book 2. If you can get past the first part of the book and the fairly predictable nature the book is pretty good. With some editing I feel this book would be great for teenagers.
This is one of the worst-written books I've read. In general, the writing was mediocre to sub-par, with a lot of words used incorrectly- it seemed like she used a thesaurus too often, and didn't quite understand the nuances of the words chosen. The grammar was on about a seventh or eighth grade level, and I'm not just being nit-picky. There were 'sentences' paragraphs-long, without a single period to be found. Instead, commas were used in place of periods, and sometimes extras were thrown in at random other places no punctuation was needed at all. The grammar wasn't just annoying- it was bad enough that I had to re-read some sections a couple of times to understand what she was even trying to say.
Interesting. The hero is called Killian, my surname is Kilian. Does it matter? Not really. But this book held even more surprises for me. expecting a James Thomas to be the protagonist as a natural follow up from the prequel, The Gateway, it is indeed Killian Thomas that stepped up to the plate.Expecting a continuation of a medieval setting we are confronted with a very advanced "modern" setting.Expecting a clear battle between a evil emperor and our hero the entire setting changed to a much more complicated struggle between no less than three ideologies amongst as many additional races of humans. And for once our heroes are not thrust willy nilly into battles way over their collective heads or abilities. They get proper training!Wow. What a captivating story it also turns out to be. I simply had to finish the book in one sitting, much to my family's chagrin and dismay. All in all, a very good YA fantasy which get a highly recommendation from me.
