An eye opening, educational novel that will have you grabbing at the tissue box. Kassem describes a dystopia no person to deserves to live in or experience. An extremely well written account, Kassem’s journey begins with the struggle of living in Assad’s Syria before the war, one where accused political dissenters could be kidnapped, tortured, and even executed without trial. His journey continues into a war where rape and starvation were weaponized to subdue people, and where a chemical weapons attack nearly took his life along with the 1,500 people that died the day his town was hit with sarin by Assad.Maybe saddest of all, the book describes how his pleas for international intervention on behalf of the Syrian people fell on deaf ears, as the world turned away its gaze as a brutal dictator continued to use chemical weapons and recreational weapons against his own people, with the no punishment or consequence. This will go down as one of the greatest moral failures not only of this generation, but in the history of mankind, and Kassem represents the lost voices of the downtrodden and oppressed in Syria.

Why he mentioned the Zionist / Israel barbs I don't know, as Israel had nothing to do with his current situation. No barbs were made to the many real despot dictatorships around the world - only Israel. While he does state facts he encountered and condemns Lebanon and Syria etc. His Israeli barbs such as accusing Israel of shutting water to the Palestinians is hearsay - was he there to see it? No he wasn't - then don't write it down as fact. You may argue his family "left" Israel or were "removed" from Israel. Truth is many the Palestinians were told by the neighbouring Arabic countries to leave Palestine so they can attack Israel and then return once they had wiped out all the Jews. This was the war of independence which we know Israel won and survived. However had his family stayed in Israel, this book wouldn't have been written because his family could have become Israeli citizens, and enjoyed all the privileges associated with it.Where are Syria's Jews today? They were expelled from Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq etc. with only the clothes on their back in 1948. The difference is the Jews have got on with building a nation, integrated into new countries and never sought compensation from their previous Arab homelands. Why have the Palestinians never been integrated into their new countries?IsraAID an Israeli aid organisation has assisted countless Syrian refugees, refugees have been secretly treated in Israeli hospitals in order to keep their identity secret from retribution. It's time the world stops using Israel as the scapegoat, even in a subtle manner as portrayed in this book. It's a distraction from what was otherwise an horrific account of a tragic circumstance and situation.I wish Kassem Eid and his family all the success for the future and hope he finds peace within

Excellent memoir by a chemical attack survivor and defender of the free people of Syria against a truly unjust dictator in Bashar al-Assad.

Kassim Eid’s personal account is a passionate story of growing up under a vicious and vindictive dictatorship as it turns to heavy violent repression in confrontation with widespread public popular opposition. Drawn by instinct and emotional attachment to justice, young Palestinian-Syrian Kassim Eid joins the non-violent street demonstrations that shake Syria in 2011. Faced with the extreme brutality of the Assad regime’s reaction to all opposition, armed conflict develops and the popular resistance becomes a revolution.Barely surviving the Syrian regime’s August 2013 sarin gas attack which killed 1,500 men, women and children in his home town Moadamiya, Kassim’s commitment to the revolution is solidified. His proficiency of the English language makes him a valuable asset to the critical media work of the opposition. He is interviewed incessantly by international media outlets, a role which makes him ever more a threat in the eyes of the fascist regime, but also plays a critical role in his ultimate escape. While the story of the sarin attack and subsequent developments are central to Kassim’s book, what this reader found particularly insightful is his recounting of his childhood and coming of age prior to the outburst of public protests in 2011. As a narrative effectively conveying the atmosphere of growing up in a nation where fear and self-censorship dominates the daily lives of ordinary people, this book is absolutely remarkable. With loving family and friends, boyhood fights and a first romance, what might be a common story of a young man anywhere else in the world becomes absolutely lurid in the psychosis of fear that controls the mindset, and thus the lives, of ordinary people in Assad’s Syria.Like the book, the struggle for justice in Syria has not yet a happy ending. The current situation in Syria is foreboding, to say the least. But there is more history to be written. It will be truly auspicious if we will be able read more of that tale from the author of this book.
