First of all the typos were plentiful and aggravating. Having said that, as someone who was born and raised in WV, I couldn't believe they expected people from here, to accept the fact there was someone from a rural area that didn't immediately know what ginseng was. Biff had never even heard of it, so I had a hard time reading the rest. But I soldiered on and finished it. I mostly read it because it was set in WV, and was hoping for something that didn't play in to all the stereotypes about WV, but alas this didn't fit the bill. I'm also not crazy about books that arrest everyone except a killer. I'm guessing the author plans to bring him back at some point, but I will never know, because I have zero interest in the rest of this series.
This could have been a good book if it had been in another setting.....maybe a moonshine family operation. I just couldn't wrap my head around how ungodly these supposed men of God acted. Bad language (thankfully not the REAL bad stuff), a hint of homosexuality,hatred, greed, etc. Their whole existence was to brew hard cider.....and sell to Mennonites of all people who wouldn't touch the stuff with a ten foot pole. Other readers might enjoy the characters, especially Odo, and the story....it just wasn't for me.
I received this book free from one of the book sites. I do not remember which one! This is my honest and voluntary review.Temptation is everywhere. Secrets & lies are revealed. A well crafted story.
The author has an original idea, an interesting plot, and interesting characters. Why then am I now, at three fourths of the way through the book debating whether or not to spend any more of my time on it? Typos were mildly irritating, but not fatal.This book held my interest and even left me looking forward to coming back to it when I had to pause in my reading. The plot moved along with some tantalizing sips,then sips became a firehose in Purgatory.Readers will understand that odd sounding reference. I am taking time to write this review because the author has talent and the story deserved more attention to editing and more gradual unfolding of important points of plot development.
What a fun mystery with a charming premise. This is reminiscent of the Brother Cadfael mysteries, where the customs of the brothers/monks interplay with the murder or death of someone. Bringing the idea into the 21st century, and adding a few twists and turns made this a great read. I hope that this author continues the series.
This was a wonderful read! I loved being transported to a place I've never been before . I found myself wanting to know more about the main characters and was so glad to see that in the next book in the series some of my questions will be answered. I look forward to revisiting these characters in the beautiful setting of their monastery and town.
